It’s the perfect time for chili as the weather is getting chilly here in Ontario! Chili was one of my favourite meals as a kid, and for many years I have tried to perfect my recipe – and I finally got it! My children were complementing me on the dish, stating that it was better than the regular chili that I make. I guess you can say this recipe is a winner!
The original recipe is from ricardocuisine.com, and I have the pleasure to share my adaptation with you today. It was fun trying a new recipe, especially this chili as it was very different from how I would normally make it. I have never added coffee to anything I cooked before and at first I was skeptical. But now I don’t think I can make chili without it! You can’t taste the coffee in the end, not sure what it does to the food but the chili sure did taste good.
I thought it had enough liquid with the canned diced tomato and coffee, any more liquid I am afraid would take away the flavours that were created. As far as the ketchup is concerned if you like the taste of baked beans you may want to add it, I like my chili spicy and savoury and for that reason I omitted the ketchup. I actually added paprika to the recipe, it added a another level of flavour and gave it a nice colour. I didn’t add cilantro as I am not a fan however, if you are then by all means add the cilantro.
I also added an extra can of beans, I usually add three cans to my chili so one can wasn’t enough for us, three would have been to much for this recipe, two cans worked out perfect.

What you will need:
- 1 onion
- 1 jalapeno (with or without seeds)
- 2-3 tbsp oil
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 -28 oz can of diced tomatoes
- 2 -19 oz can of kidney beans (rinsed and drained)
- 1 cup coffee
- 1/2 juice of a lime*
- salt to taste
Dice onion and jalapeno. In a large pot, heat oil and add the onion and jalapeno, cook until onion softens, add in garlic and spices, season with salt. Add in ground beef and break apart, cook until partly brown. Add in coffee, then add the diced tomatoes, lime juice, stir around taste and add salt to taste.
Cook on low to medium heat, for about 45 minutes. Enjoy!
*You may add more lime if you prefer.
Looks GREAT! I love the addition of the coffee and have also added cocoa powder to my chili. Just like the coffee, you can’t taste it, but it boosts and intensifies the flavor of the chili.
