Kataifi with walnuts was one of my favourite desserts growing up, and in fact when I was pregnant with my youngest it was one of my cravings, not such a good craving to have since it is so sweet. Kataif is shredded filo and can be used in many different kinds desserts. This is how my family makes it, so I am sharing my version of kataif with walnuts with you.
Just like making baklava the syrup needs to be cool before adding to kataifi.
*Make the syrup ahead of time and allow to cool to room temperature*
Syrup:
- 3 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
Bring sugar and water to boil for about five minutes (boiling time) until thickened. Add a squeeze of lemon juice.
What you will need:
- 1 pkg thawed kataifi shredded filo
- 1 -2 cups ground walnuts
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter melted
Thaw package of kataif, and melt the butter, set aside. Cut the kataif up and combine it with the melted butter. You can shape them in circles or just roll them up like in the photo above.
Lay walnuts across the kataif and roll tightly and place into greased pan. You can make it individual portions like in the photo or just roll up and place them closely together in the pan.
Bake at 350 until golden.
The time varies if you like your kataifi very brown or light. Could take 40-50 mins.
Pour over read made syrup. Sprinkle ground pistachios or walnuts if you like, serve warm.
