Summertime, gardening, and watermelon all remind me of my grandfather. This summer I have been thinking about him a lot. Maybe because I am older and have so many things I wish I could say to him, or ask him.
The world has changed a lot since he passed away in 1999. He always had the best answers for my questions, I have so many now and no one to ask them to.
I don’t have many memories of the stories that he told, I wish now that I had written them down. Mostly I remember the foods that he enjoyed and the foods he would cook or bake with my grandma. They would call me into the kitchen so I can learn traditional Albanian style foods.
A typical summer’s day dinner for us was pan fried peppers, feta cheese and watermelon…they were filled with seeds not like the ones we find at the stores today, you mostly only see seedless, here in my area anyways.
Sometimes my grandfather would even make some scrabbled eggs with feta to the mix…he would have to be really hungry that day. Dinner was always simple and fresh. The peppers in the summer always came from the garden, as would the other vegetables. We had a huge garden, it took up most of the front yard. Yes front yard…we had a corner house and the whole front was our backyard!
It was unique and beautiful. I miss that old house, the memories there will last a lifetime. Today I am sharing something that is so simple, but means so much to me.
My grandfather’s favourite summertime snack: watermelon and feta. Add some bread, and peppers and you got yourself a delicious meal!
Let’s bring simple back! Simple life, simple cooking and just be happy and make the people around you happy! Now go cut up some watermelon and cut up some feta, break some bread and enjoy with your family and friends!
Beautiful post <3
