Its cold outside, the kids are playing the in the snow…and wait! You go out and surprise them with homemade hot cocoa, the kids are going wild with joy! Okay so maybe that’s just my kids, but its the simple things in life that should make us happy!
I use to always buy my hot cocoa, not even thinking about the ingredients, it was convenient…open a packet pour over some hot water and voila…hot cocoa! My mom used to tell me why not make your own…the main reason was my daughter who loves hot cocoa couldn’t always have it with milk.
Now that she is older, her tolerance to milk is better, I personally think its because we switched to organic milk…who knows…I am just glad that she can enjoy it, she absolutely loves hot cocoa!
I love adding marshmallows, and to make it fancy I cut them up with kitchen scissors to make petals, then dip the petals in cocoa or cinnamon, arrange them on top of the hot cocoa to form a flower.
If you don’t have marshmallows, you can take some sweetened whipped cream (as in the above picture) and spread some on a small pan lined with wax or parchment paper freeze and cut out with mini cookie cutters.
Depending on how many cups you need, is how much milk and cocoa you will need. I don’t specify on the amount of sugar as that is a personal preference, if you like it sweet or not.
What you will need:
- 2 cups milk
- 1 heaping tbsp dark cocoa
- Sugar to sweeten
In a 2 qt sauce pan, combine sugar, cocoa and milk, whisk well and heat till milk is hot, do not bring to a boil. Pour into cups, top with marshmallows and a sprinkle of cocoa if desired. Enjoy!
