My mom lived in Holland for 7 years and 7 years in Sweden as a kid, and while she lived there she learned how to make Dutch apple pie. In Sweden they don’t use crust, its more like apple crisp here in North America, and that is just how she has always made it, without crust. I actually prefer that way, but at times I like to make a crust, I share the recipe for the crust in the bottom of the post.
I don’t think I can never make mine like hers, no matter how many times I try…but that doesn’t stop me from making it!!:) Even though she says mine taste just like hers, I will always like hers better!:) Is there a recipe that you make that you think your mom or someone else makes better?
My mom does not measure with cups (that’s where I get it from), so although I cannot give you exact measurements, I will give you approx what they are.
If you like you can use a pie crust for the bottom, it is wonderful as well:)
You will need:
- 12-14 apples depending on size of apples
- 3-4 tsp cornstarch
- brown sugar
- cinnamon
- cornstarch
- pie crust if using
You will need about 1/2 cup brown sugar and a couple teaspoons of cinnamon to cover the apples, you may add more brown sugar if you like your pie sweet or if using tart apples.
Mix together transfer to pan.
Now to make the streusel, you need approx 1 cup brown sugar , approx 2 cups of flour, and cinnamon.
Taste to see if you like the amount of cinnamon or if you want more sugar.
Then drizzle in the veg oil, till you get the right consistency it should get crumbly like in the picture. Bake in the oven 350 for about 1 hour. Serve on its own or with vanilla ice cream. 🙂
Pie crust for 12 inch pan:
- 1 stick and 3 tsp of cold unsalted butter
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 cup butter milk
- dash of salt
Combine the flour and butter with 2 knives or hands, when it becomes crumbly its ready to add the buttermilk. Add in the buttermilk and form into dough. Form into ball and flatten out, flour surface and roll, add to pan and pinch edges.
This looks yummie!!! Can't wait to try this out! 🙂
